Eye Conditions: Pinguecula and Pterygium - More Common Than You Think.

If you have ever noticed white or yellowish bumps on the side of your cornea or white tissue growing over the cornea, you might be suffering from Pinguecula or Pterygium.

These conditions differ in that a Pinguecula is a bump next to the cornea, while a pterygium is a triangular tissue growth that invades the cornea, which is usually found near the inner corner of the eye but can sometimes appears at both corners.

Both Pinguecula and Pterygium result from prolonged exposure to UV rays, especially from sunlight or certain types of artificial lights, as well as chronic irritation or inflammation of the conjunctiva from wind, dust, smoke, or frequent dry eyes. Studies show that pterygium is twice as common in people who work or spend a lot of time outdoors but decreases by a fifth in those who wear sunglasses when doing so.

Symptoms

Some people may not experience symptoms, but many often have itchy, red, or irritated eyes. Pinguecula does not affect vision, but if a pterygium grows over the cornea, it can obscure vision, worsen eyesight, or cause astigmatism.

Treatment

Wearing sunglasses and avoiding exposure to harsh sunlight, wind and dust can help reduce eye discomfort and prevent the development of these conditions. Eye drops may be needed to relieve irritation and redness. Surgery is not necessary for Pinguecula but might be required for pterygium if it affects vision, causes significant astigmatism or frequent inflammation.

If you have frequent eye irritation or redness and suspect you might have Pinguecula or pterygium, you can get your eyes checked at the Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat Department at Samitivej Chonburi Hospital at any time.
