Oral Food Challenge Test (OFC), or the “food allergy test by oral ingestion,” is the most accurate and standard method for diagnosing Food Allergy. During the test, the doctor will gradually give the patient small amounts of the suspected food under close medical supervision in the hospital.

This test is considered the Gold Standard for confirming food allergy diagnosis because it is the most accurate and reliable method available. The type of food selected for testing is based on the patient’s medical history together with the results of a Skin Prick Test or Specific IgE test, or to confirm whether the patient has outgrown the allergy.

Who Should Take an Oral Food Challenge Test?

Test Procedure

1. Avoid the suspected food beforehand (as instructed by the doctor)

2. The patient should be in good health and not ill on the test day

3. Stop taking antihistamines for 7 days before the test

4. The doctor will begin giving the suspected food in gradually increasing amounts

5. Symptoms will be closely monitored by the medical team

6. The Oral Food Challenge takes approximately 2–4 hours

7. If symptoms occur → the test will be stopped immediately and treatment will be given
