What is Root Canal Treatment and How Is It Done?

Root canal treatment is a dental procedure that helps preserve a tooth affected by deep decay that has caused infection in the dental pulp or inflammation of the tooth nerve. Instead of extracting the tooth, the infected tissue is removed because the overall tooth structure is still healthy and can be restored. The dentist eliminates the infection and cleans the inside of the tooth to save it.

Examination and Treatment Process

1. The dentist will begin with an examination and X-ray. An opening is then made to access the root canal, where the infected tissue is removed. The root canal system is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected until the inside of the tooth is free from infection.

2. The dentist seals and fills the root canal to prevent further infection, allowing the patient to keep and use the tooth without needing extraction.

3. The dentist uses a Dental Operating Microscope, a specialized microscope that can magnify the treatment area up to 20 times with powerful illumination. This allows the dentist to clearly view the root canal area, improving precision and reducing the chance of errors. The microscope can also help detect hidden cracks or fractures in the tooth and root that may be difficult to see with the naked eye.

Although many people worry that root canal treatment will be painful, modern dentistry uses effective local anesthesia, making the procedure more comfortable. Root canal treatment allows patients to preserve their natural teeth and continue using them for many years.
