There are two main types of standard echocardiograms:

  • Transesophageal echocardiogram is a procedure that inserts prob from throat to esophagus. The probe records the sound wave echoes as they bounce back from the heart and the computer will convert the echoes into moving images of the heart that can be viewed in real time.
  • Transthoracic echocardiogram is the most common form of echocardiogram high-frequency sound waves are aimed at the heart through the chest, and the probe records the sound wave echoes as they bounce back. A computer then converts these echoes into moving imagery.
