Prevnar13

Pneumococcal disease refers to any illness affect various part of body caused by bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcal bacteria). Bacteria can cause many types of illnesses, including pneumonia, which is an infection of the lungs. 

Symptoms of Pneumococcal disease:
* Ear infections
* Sinus infections
* Pneumonia
* Meningitis
* Bacteremia

Pneumococcal vaccine in Thailand:
- PCV13 (Prevnar 13) contains 13 polysaccharide serotypes of S pneumonia.
The Prevnar 13 decreased incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD), reduced transmission across all age groups and unvaccinated populations.
- PPSV 23 (Pneumovax 23) is a active immunization for the prevention of pneumococcal disease, contain 23 polysaccharide serotypes of S pneumonia.

Recommended for:
For children get Prevnar 13 at 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, and 12-15 months of age

Adults ages 19-64 years
Adults aged 19 to 64 years with chronic diseases (Diabetes mellitus, congestive heart failure, cardiomyopathy, chronic liver disease, chronic lung disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, chronic renal failure, cigarette smoking) and  immunocompetent person (CSF leak, HIV, Hodgkin’s disease, iatrogenic immunosuppression, leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, sickle cell disease, hemoglobinopathy, organ transplant) that put high risk for IPD (Invasive streptococcal disease) should receive one dose of PCV13.
- Chronic disease: one dose of Prevnar 13 should be given if the you has never received a pneumococcal vaccine and followed by a dose of Pneumovax 23 at least 1 year after the Prevnar 13
- Immunocompetent person: 1 dose of Prevnar 13 should be given and followed by a dose of Pneumovax 23 at least 8 week after the Prevnar 13 one dose of Pneumovax >5 years after the last pneumococcal dose

Adults aged > 65 years
- One dose of Prevnar 13 should be given if the you has never received a pneumococcal vaccine and followed by a dose of Pneumovax 23 at least 1 year after the Prevnar 13
- If you have a cochlear implant, CSF leak, or an immunocompromised state 1 dose of Prevnar 13 should be given and followed by a dose of Pneumovax 23 at least 8 week after the Prevnar 13 one dose of Pneumovax >5 years after the last pneumococcal dose is recommended.
