New Non-Live Shingles Vaccine
Recombinant Subunit Zoster Vaccine (RZV)
This vaccine does not contain live varicella-zoster virus. Instead, it uses a specific viral protein known as glycoprotein E to stimulate the immune response.
• 97% effective in preventing shingles in adults aged 50 years and older
• 91.2% effective in preventing postherpetic neuralgia (PHN)
• Long-term follow-up of up to 10 years shows sustained protection, with 89% effectiveness against shingles
Vaccination Recommendations
• Adults aged 50 years and older
The vaccine is recommended as two intramuscular injections in the upper arm, administered 2–6 months apart.
• Adults aged 18 years and older at increased risk of shingles, such as:
– Individuals with compromised or weakened immune systems
– Those receiving steroid therapy
– Patients undergoing radiation therapy or chemotherapy
Because these groups have reduced immunity, they are at a higher risk of developing shingles.
The vaccine is administered as two intramuscular injections in the upper arm, given 1–2 months apart.
• As this new shingles vaccine is non-live, it is safe for immunocompromised individuals.
• The shingles vaccine may be given regardless of a prior history of chickenpox.
Testing for varicella immunity (varicella IgG) is not required before vaccination.
• Individuals who have previously had shingles may still receive the vaccine.
Vaccination should be given at least 6 months after recovery from shingles.
• For individuals who do not yet meet the age criteria for shingles vaccination, chickenpox (varicella) vaccination should be considered first.
The shingles vaccine is not recommended for the prevention of chickenpox.
