PCV15 is a conjugate vaccine developed to protect against 15 strains of pneumococcus: 1, 3, 4, 5, 6A, 6B, 7F, 9V, 14, 18C, 19A, 19F, 22F, 23F, and 33F. This vaccine helps reduce the risk of pneumonia and sepsis.

Who is at Risk of Pneumococcal Infection?

• Adults aged 65 years and older
• Adults of any age with risk factors for pneumococcal infection, including:
  • Chronic alcoholism
  • Chronic heart, lung, kidney, or liver disease
  • Cochlear implant surgery
  • Cerebrospinal fluid leaks
  • Diabetes
  • HIV infection, cancer, organ transplant, immunocompromised conditions, or treatment with immunosuppressive drugs
  • Nephrotic syndrome
  • Sickle cell disease, asplenia, or functional hyposplenia
  • Smokers

For adults with these risk factors, PCV15 vaccination is recommended to enhance protection. Consideration may also be given to administering PPSV23 afterward, with a minimum interval of 1 year.
